RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead a team of experienced EnergyX scientists in research and development focused on disruptive materials and engineering systems to fundamentally transform scientific aspects of the energy industry including:

  • Oversee laboratory supporting EnergyX engineering needs across all products and technologies
  • Direct and review material evaluations using thermal analytical, and spectroscopic techniques
  • Manage technicians supporting materials laboratory functions
  • Mentor and train technicians to better support or expand laboratory capabilities
  • Track and communicate status of laboratory projects to design, production, and materials engineers
  • Maintain calibration of equipment and perform or coordinate repairs if necessary
  • Evaluate state of the industry techniques and equipment for future lab capabilities

On the executive leadership team:

  • Ability to interface between EnergyX investors, customers, university partners, technology R&D partners, and commercial (EPC) partners on technical / engineering side
  • Act as the interface with customers on brine testing program and next phases for collaboration with producers
  • Able to access competitive technologies and their applications
  • Develop strategic roadmap for future applications of core technologies
  • Effective communication skills as related to board, partners and investors including presentation skills at meetings and conferences
  • Delegate projects between different initiatives of EnergyX Scientific Operations

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in engineering or similar field
  • 10+ years of experience working in a materials laboratory or similar function
  • Experience managing groups and teams of technicians and workflow for a laboratory
  • Success in commercializing new technology from lab work and understands integrating technology into overall process design

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • General knowledge of the water, desalination, membrane, energy storage and lithium industries
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, startup environment 
  • Ability to train technicians on scientific equipment
  • Working with chemicals including acids

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Understanding of techniques applicable for lithium extraction, separation, recovery, and refining
  • Development of scalable casting and system integration for mixed matrix membranes
  • Experience performing SEM, EDS, and other electron spectroscopy methods to evaluate membranes and other nano materials
  • Understanding of mechanical testing, heat treatment, machining, and sample processing as it pertains to membranes
  • Experience carrying out technical tasks in direct support of membrane engineering decision making
  • Familiarity with new interfaces including controlled topology, functionalities to achieve optimal affinity, and reactivity specifically for water / energy systems such as ion-specific separation
  • Control mesoscopic materials architecture to achieve exquisite control of pore size and pore size distribution in membranes to tune multicomponent fluid transport by leveraging design principles
  • Model multicomponent interfaces, fluid mixtures, and mesoporous architecture to transform efficiency and resiliency of membrane / materials systems
  • Experience working with multiple energy material systems in a laboratory or processing setting: salts, composites, polymers, and nano-particles
